There are important connections between arts and sciences generally, and music and chemistry in particular. Some insights into the connections between music and chemistry were nicely articulated in 2018 by Christina Bodurow. As both a chemist and composer, John Berry has highlighted some of these connections in several efforts.
Other musical works written by John Berry that have been performed are Dances for String Quartet (1998), Disturbances for Piano (1999), Sonata for Piano (2000), Sonata for Violincello and Piano (2000), Piano Quintet (2000), In Memoriam FAC (2007, solo viola piece performed for the memorial of John’s PhD advisor, F. Albert Cotton), and Sonata for Violin and Piano (2019).
In 2020, John wrote the Lament for the Victims of COVID-19, which can be heard on YouTube in a performance by fellow chemist Pat Holland from Yale University.
In 2010 and 2019, two Concert at Chemistry performances highlighted musical pieces composed by John: the Sonata for Tuba and Piano, and Three Petrarchian Sonnets for mezzosoprano and piano.
Parts for the chamber pieces are available; please contact John Berry (berry@chem.wisc.edu) if you are interested.
