Luke Mangas (he/him) was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He earned his B.S. in chemistry and mathematics at Eastern Michigan University. At Eastern Michigan, Luke used computational methods to investigate transition metal-catalyzed C–H activation reactions under Dr. Maria Milletti. During the summer of 2022, he worked with Dr. Selvan Demir at Michigan State University to synthesize bismuth-containing single molecule magnets. Luke joined the Berry lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the fall of 2023. Outside of the lab, he enjoys reading, video games, card games, seeing snow, and visiting new places.

Luke works to implement p-block metals into the heterometallic extended metal atom chain (HEMAC) project for use in single-molecule electronics. Existing literature combines one d-block and one p-block metal into a bimetallic complex, with a single bond between the metal atoms. Luke is incorporating a third metal into these systems to create HEMAC complexes with three distinct metals in the chain. These compounds may exhibit interesting and useful electromagnetic properties due to the high anisotropy of the complexes and the high spin-orbit coupling of the heavier p-block metals.
